Poetry can feel intimidating—for students and parents. But poetry does not have to begin with vague feelings or a blank page.
In these short, live workshops, students will learn how poets use sound, imagery, comparison, and playful language to make words come alive. Each workshop gives students a clear writing path, guided practice, and time to create their own poems during class.
Students may register for one workshop or join both.
Students ages 8-12 (Grades 3-6)
Students who enjoy creative writing
Students who feel unsure about poetry but would benefit from structure
Students who can write complete sentences independently or with light support
Older students who would enjoy a light, creative writing refresher
Parents are welcome to listen in nearby, but students should be able to participate on Zoom.

Students who attend both workshops will receive a fuller introduction to poetic language, including sound devices, figurative language, sensory detail, and creative expression.
Poetry helps students slow down and attend to language.
It teaches them to notice sound, rhythm, image, comparison, and emotion. These are not just “poetry skills.” They are writing skills. When students learn to choose words carefully in a poem, they also strengthen the way they write descriptions, stories, essays, and speeches.
Poetry gives students a manageable place to play with language—and that playful practice can grow confidence.

I am a writing teacher who has worked with middle school students in the classroom and now with homeschool students in a more personal setting. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing and English Literature, and while I often teach structured writing through IEW, I have always loved the creative side of language—especially poetry.
As an IEW Registered Instructor, I have several years of experience tutoring students and helping them grow in confidence and skill. I have also taught within the Classical Conversations community, which has given me valuable experience guiding students through different stages of their writing development.
At home, I am a homeschool mom to two sons, so I understand the value of instruction that is clear, manageable, and encouraging for both students and parents.
In addition to teaching, I write as a homeschool and parenting blogger, children’s book author, and devotional writer. Writing is something I both teach and continue to practice.
Above all, I aim to come alongside families as a warm, steady writing coach—offering practical tools and encouragement so students feel capable and ready to put their ideas into words.
