Give your young writer simple tools for creative, expressive poetry.

Poetry can feel intimidating—for students and parents. But poetry does not have to begin with vague feelings or a blank page.

In these short, live workshops, students will learn how poets use sound, imagery, comparison, and playful language to make words come alive. Each workshop gives students a clear writing path, guided practice, and time to create their own poems during class.

Students may register for one workshop or join both.

WHO this is ideal for…

  • Students ages 8-12 (Grades 3-6)

  • Students who enjoy creative writing

  • Students who feel unsure about poetry but would benefit from structure

  • Students who can write complete sentences independently or with light support

  • Older students who would enjoy a light, creative writing refresher

Parents are welcome to listen in nearby, but students should be able to participate on Zoom.

What's Included?

  • Two Video Replay sessions per workshop (1 hour each)

  • Guided poetry instruction

  • In-class writing activities

  • Optional at-home poetry extensions

  • Printable workshop pages

  • Time for students to share if they choose

Workshop II:

Words That Come Alive

Personification, Similes, & Sensory Poetry

$19

to help readers see, feel, and imagine clearly.

  • Practice “make it human” poetry activities

  • Write a “Things I Could Do” poem

  • Learn how similes create vivid comparisons

  • Practice “A is like B” comparisons

  • Write sensory poetry using emotion, image, and description

Which workshop should I pick?

Choose One or Join Both

These workshops are designed to stand alone, so families may choose the sessions that work best.

Receive a discount when you BUNDLE the two workshops! (Discounted Bundle appears on order form).

Students who attend both workshops will receive a fuller introduction to poetic language, including sound devices, figurative language, sensory detail, and creative expression.

Why Poetry?

  • Poetry helps students slow down and attend to language.

  • It teaches them to notice sound, rhythm, image, comparison, and emotion. These are not just “poetry skills.” They are writing skills. When students learn to choose words carefully in a poem, they also strengthen the way they write descriptions, stories, essays, and speeches.

  • Poetry gives students a manageable place to play with language—and that playful practice can grow confidence.

FAQ to Help You Decide:

IS THIS VIRTUAL OR IN-PERSON?

This is VIRTUAL training from my LIVE Zoom. The workshops will be recorded so that you can review as you need.

Is this a full poetry course?

No. These are short, focused workshops designed to give students a meaningful introduction to poetry writing without a long-term commitment.

Does my student need poetry experience?

No. Students will be guided step by step, using real poems as examples.

Can my student take just one of the workshops?

Yes. Each workshop stands alone. Take one or take both! Students who take both will receive a broader poetry experience, but either workshop can be taken by itself.

Will students have homework?

There will be optional at-home extensions for students who want to continue writing after class.

Will students have to share their poems?

Sharing will be encouraged, but not forced. Poetry can feel personal, and students may participate in ways that feel comfortable.

MEET Julie Kieras

Hi, I'm Julie

I am a writing teacher who has worked with middle school students in the classroom and now with homeschool students in a more personal setting. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing and English Literature, and while I often teach structured writing through IEW, I have always loved the creative side of language—especially poetry.

As an IEW Registered Instructor, I have several years of experience tutoring students and helping them grow in confidence and skill. I have also taught within the Classical Conversations community, which has given me valuable experience guiding students through different stages of their writing development.

At home, I am a homeschool mom to two sons, so I understand the value of instruction that is clear, manageable, and encouraging for both students and parents.

In addition to teaching, I write as a homeschool and parenting blogger, children’s book author, and devotional writer. Writing is something I both teach and continue to practice.

Above all, I aim to come alongside families as a warm, steady writing coach—offering practical tools and encouragement so students feel capable and ready to put their ideas into words.
